Housatonic River, Bulls Bridge, CT
February 2021

The Housatonic River at Bulls Bridge is an area that I am constantly drawn to, not only is it a really beautiful stretch but it is also a great area to hike.

Just a week before this photograph was taken the river had been frozen solid as is usual in a normal snowy winter, then came the rains and an unseasonable thaw. This tumult was the result, the noise and speed of the water was truly awe-inspiring, it was begging to be photographed.

The riverbank in this location was icy, slippery and steep but to get the shot I had to get the camera as close to the water as possible. I secured my tripod with a paracord to a solid tree and inched it down the rocky bank. After setting it up and ensuring that it was safe I went back for the camera equipment. To ensure that the water retained its texture I eventually settled on a shutter speed of half a second, as opposed to the 2 to 4 second speeds that I normally use around moving water.

I'm thrilled with the result and can still feel the rush every time I look at the image.
