Meet Jane
Jane Haslam, an Award Winning Landscape and Nature Photographer
Hello there, and thank you for taking the time to visit Jane Haslam Photography. Originally from Derbyshire in the UK, photography has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. For many years I maintained my own darkroom, photographing the post industrial landscape around my home and mainly working in black and white. At the time I particularly admired the work of British photographers Fay Godwin and Bill Brandt, as well as that of iconic American landscape photographer, Ansel Adams.
With the advent of digital photography, then finding myself out of work, my focus totally shifted and I set up in business in the North of England, providing wedding, event and sports photography services. In 2009 I married Nitin, an American citizen and emigrated to the United States, consequently I've lived and owned a photography business in the Hudson Valley ever since.
In 2018 I converted part of my Studio into a landscape photography gallery called LAND, and then further expanded in the Winter of 2022 into a fully curated artisan space representing some of the best photographers, artists and craftspeople in the area. Creating LAND has allowed me to re-imagine Jane Haslam Photography so that now I can devote much of my time to the pursuit of landscape photography, in fact even though I've lived in the USA for over 15 years I still very much see the Northeast through the eyes of a visitor.
Working in the landscape makes me happy deep in my soul and there is something very special about tackling the photography challenges posed by the unpredictability of the natural world. If there is a choice my favorite time to work is in the early morning, the light is more nuanced and the landscape has a serenity that I rarely feel at the end of a busy day. Hiking in the dark to a chosen location is always a challenge, but is also great preparation, all I have to do is watch my footing and think about the photography to come. Whatever the time of day however, I find that I am at peace behind the camera and my aim is to provide emotive landscape photography that transports you into my world at the moment I clicked that shutter.
I now enjoy life to the full in this beautiful part of New York State and as there is such a range of landscapes within a 2 hour drive of my home I find that I am often spoilt for choice for where to go. I think you can see my love of the landscape throughout my portfolio and hope that my photography inspires you to go outside and experience it for yourself.
I practice Leave No Trace principles and am a member of Nature First the Alliance for Responsible Nature Photography and the Nature Photographers Network.
